Metamorphosis mind map

Max Ernst

Max Ernst was a German sculptor, poet, graphic artist, painter and printmaker. He was born in 1891, on 2 April and died in 1976, on 1 April. He was a primary explorer of Dada movement and Surrealism. He experimented in art and invented frottage and grattage. He used materials like wood, wire mesh, crumple paper and crust of bread for his frottage work. He used pencils or crayon for the frottage work. He did collages, paintings, sculptures and printmaking. Apart from frottage an grattage he also experimented in techniques like decalcomania, dripping and oscillation. For his painting he used oil or gouache. Europe after the Rain II is an abstract apocalyptic landscape, which is similar to painting ruins. It shows the chaotic mess remain after the war. I like the colour in the image and the ruins they look great and is easy to detect them. I also like the decalcomania image. It reminds me of something like an explosion, also if you loo at the details they remind me of algae. The grattage image reminds me of buildings or unconstructed buildings at night. Some of his work is monotone and some are really colourful like the whole city. There are a lot of lines and dots specially in the Gramineous Bicycle. There is less work in the background and more in front. I think I will do some decalcomania, frottage and grattage work. I will use my primary images for the work. I think his work is very detailed, has a lot of colour and techniques.

Frottage experiments

For this task I have used different things which have texture, like letters, cardboard, mirrors and frame. From materials I used oil pastel and charcoal. I think this was easy to do. There are lots of lines, and patterns. I used less colour. There are patterns which looks like dots and flowers.

Grattage experiments

For the grattage experiments I have used some of the primary images I took on the journey to the butterfly gardens. I stared with warming the ink on the glass using the roller. Then I used the end of the brush to draw the butterfly and flowers. For the last one I used a different method I draw on top of the paper. I really like the texture after they dried. I like the blue flower and the cell like print. The purple flower is a bit hard to see. The butterfly went well in the print too.

Decalcomania experiments

For this technique I used water, ink and plastic foil. I warmed the ink on the glass and add some water. I took a piece of plastic foil and made some texture like patterns. They remind me of squids like form or seagrass. It is really abstract. I think I like the most the texture of the ink. In the first image at the bottom corner you could see something like trees, and the image itself look in my eyes like a path in the mountains or something like this.

Landscape collage

For the collage I have used the decalcomania, grattage and frottage prints which I did the previous day. I tried to do something like a landscape with butterfly and flowers and sky. I used the frottage paper prints as a grass because there was the green colour. The yellow part which was a cell like form I used a a flower too. For the sky I used more blue and violet colour. I think the outcome is quite monotone, because the is not a lot of colour and it dose not look bright, more like passive. It tired the eye a bit. I really love the texture of the ink on the paper.

 Favianna Rodriguez quiz

Favianna Rodriguez

Favianna Rodriguez is an American artist and activist. She identify herself as queer and Latina with Afro-Peruvian roots. In 1990s she began to do political poster designs in response to racial justice in California. She uses her work to respond to issues like globalisation, immigration, feminism, patriarchy and economic injustice. She has different types of collection like abstract, social justice and activism and nature and animals. She uses two printmaking techniques- linoleum block and monotype. She was inspired by feminist art from 1970s and 1980s. In Mexico she learned about Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Che Guevara powerful political work. In her work there are a lot of bright and vibrant colours, also she uses layers. for my work I will use layers and different colours to make it vibrant and some layers.

Stencil mono – print

I have used primary images of leave and butterfly to create the stencils. I first warmed the ink on the board then I place the paper on it and used another roller on top to press it. I then added another colour and used the stencils on them and repeat the process with the roller on top. I also did a butterfly using the grattage technique, the butterfly is in the corner, orange colour. I like the most the leave in this technique. It looks amazing. I like the butterfly too. I did two prints and then the stencil broke. The colours are really vibrant and bold.

Lino print

For this lino print I have choose to do something similar to Favianna Rodriguez. I used to make a portrait in her style showing the changes in the person, like she got older. For the background I also added a leave and flower, like she have in some of her work. I start by doing a simple form of the face and did the first layer on paper. I warmed the ink then place it on the lino and then press it on the paper with a cleaner roller. I did another layer on the lino making a pattern on the shirt and adding some more details in the face and hair. For the last layer I made more lines on the face. in the hair I did not cut everything out so it looks a bit more like the hair. I tried to show that she got older by making some like which suggest the wrinkles on her face. I like how it finishes. I like the colours together. I think I could improve the hair in the yellow spot and do it like the last layer I did by cutting bits out not everything.

Padlet End of Lesson Reflection Task

Lino print 2

In this lino print I wanted to show the grow of the butterfly, how it gets out of the pupa and fly away. I started by making a brunch where the pupa is. I did it only in two colours because I did not know what other colour to use. after I wash it and start to draw another layer. The second layer shows how the butterfly emerges from the pupa. I did some patterns on the butterfly so it could not be really simple. For the last layer I cut the butterfly how it flys from the pupa and have its own way now. From the two prints I like the most the one with the blue colour on top of the layer. It looks more clear. I think I should have used a different colour maybe darker on the second print so it could be maybe more clear on what in the print.

Jet James is a printmaker, painter and mixed media artist. He found art as gift to express his feelings and give purpose to his life. He start as an artist because his father was an artist and he was influenced by him. He always did it when he was a kid. In 2005 he start his diploma in visual art and decided to take it as a career. The award which he received build his confidence. He also teach overseas. He start thinking bigger after the award. He got recognises after doing a collagraph portrait. His advices are learning different technique and to convey a narrative with it, create a professional product. He also advised to make lots of work. His work is based on his emotion.

Danielle Louise

Danielle Louise was born and raised in London. She is a creative and performative visual artist. She has done illustrations, paintings, lino cuts, even made jewellery and clothes. Her art is inspired by black women, African culture, animals, and patterns. She finds art an escape to a creative world. I think she does a lot of patterns in the background. she uses some colours and are not very bright. I think she uses a lot lines, flowers and leaves for the background.

Collagraph printing

For this task I have used one of my primary images. This is another method of printing like lino or stencil mono print. I used the bubble wrap to show the water, cardboard to how the fence and thread with rise to show the buildings. I used colour which are similar to the image to make this print. I made my piece on a cardboard. When I start printing after two times the bubble wrap start falling, I used glue stick to stuck it for a bit to make another print. I think I should use more glue for it. I like the texture of the bubble wrap part, it is really nice. I also did some more experiments, like printing on paper with tissue and draw on it after printing. With the drawing I tried to make the city some buildings and the fence with a pencil. For the tissue paper on paper I used black ink and green , I wanted the tissue paper to stand out and to not mix with ink colour. If I was able to improve it I could redo it with more materials so there cloud be more textures.

Padlet – FMP Trip, Proposal & Development Discussion

2) Write down two ideas or techniques you could try in your own FMP developmental work? – maybe layering and printing.

3) What is your understanding of ‘developmental’ work? What do you need to do? – experimenting, making research, analysing.
